Aloha pilots delay strike action

As global airline failures mount, US carrier Aloha Airlines' pilots union has delayed a promised strike until today, Monday, as it waits for an update in the Bankruptcy Court on discussions between the company and two prospective buyers -- Saltchuk Resources and Jupiter Holdings -- for Aloha's cargo operations. Saltchuk said late last week it would not increase its offer of US$13m despite Aloha's financiers saying they would not accept less than US$20m.

Northwest lifts fuel surcharges, reports Q1 loss

US carrier Northwest Airlines Cargo is to raise fuel surcharges effective May 1, subject to government approvals. Domestic fuel surcharges rise to US$0.42 from US$0.38 cents per pound and international surcharges rise to US$1.05 from US$0.95 cents per kilogram. Northwest said westbound trans-Pacific shipments from the US to Shanghai, Guangzhou and points beyond will be subject to an additional US$0.25 cents per kilogram charge.

Aloha cargo suitor pulls out

Saltchuk Resources has withdrawn from the bidding for Aloha Airlines' cargo unit. Seattle, USA-based Saltchuk said it was unwilling to raise its US$13 million bid to the US$20 million threshold required by Aloha's primary lender.  Meanwhile, Aloha management is seeking a court order against its cargo pilots to prevent them striking or disrupting operations.
