SIA cuts back US freighter capacity

Singapore Airlines (SIA) reported a 2.4 per cent year-on-year growth in system-wide passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger kilometres) for March, while capacity (measured in available seat kilometres) grew by 4.5 per cent. This resulted in a decline in the passenger load factor (PLF) of 1.6 percentage points to 80.8 per cent. The number of passengers carried rose by 2.3 per cent over the same month last year to 1.66 million.

US airlines Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines have confirmed they intend to merge. The proposed airline will be called Delta and will be headed by current Delta ceo Richard Anderson in Delta’s Atlanta HQ, with executive offices in Minnesota's Twin Cities, where Northwest is headquartered.

Some UK travel insurance companies say they will not issue new policies to cover travellers for lost baggage if they have journeys through London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5, at least until insurers are sure the terminal is capable of safely handling tens of thousands of passengers’ bags a day.

Air China has set a cargo target for this year of 1.10 million tons, an increase of 17.9 per cent over 2007 and equivalent to a cargo load factor of 55.5 per cent. The carrier also wants to see passenger load factor hit 80.1 per cent. –Jack Handley
