Joint Customs deal sets precedent

The signing of a joint trade security agreement between the United States and New Zealand has been described by Ralph Basham, commissioner of United States Customs and Border Protection, as a major step toward implementing the Customs-to-business pillar of the World Customs Organisation’s SAFE Framework of Standards.

SIA Cargo reports ‘modest’ growth in July

Singapore Airlines Cargo reports overall cargo traffic (measured in freight tonne kilometres) has continued upwards, registering growth of 4.9 per cent, which outpaced its system-wide capacity growth of 4.5 per cent. Capacity M tonne-km was 1,087.6 in 2007 compared to 1,040.8 (2006).

Exchange rate movements, the weakened US dollar and falling demand for US-destined freight have all impacted on British Airways World Cargo revenue for the first quarter. The carrier reported a reduction in commercial revenues (flown revenues plus fuel surcharges) of 11.5 per cent to GBP146 million for the first quarter, down 7.3 per cent after the effects of exchange rate movements are removed.

Qantas has confirmed a record profit before tax of AU$1,032 million for the year ended 30 June 2007, a 53.8 per cent increase on the prior year to 30 June 2006. The profit includes provision of AU$47 million announced on Monday, 13 August, against liabilities the carrier may incur in the United States for involvement in an alleged freight cartel.
